Ask a Prenatal Chiropractor: What is the Webster Technique?

Portland, Oregon: Prenatal chiropractor Dr. Lisa Jewell explains the benefits of the Webster Technique, a healthy chiropractic method to support a more comfortable, safer, and easier birth.
As your baby’s delivery date approaches, you’re eager to know that your little one is ready for safe delivery. You want to be sure that they are settled into the best position for labor and delivery.
One of my favorite chiropractic methods to ease deliveries is the Webster Technique. Prenatal chiropractors use the Webster Technique to help align the pelvic and sacral areas for mothers during pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, and beyond.
Read on to discover the benefits of the Webster Technique, how it works, and whether it’s right for you.
What are the Webster Technique benefits?
The Webster Technique aims to make more space in the uterus for your baby to freely move into the correct position (head down). It’s considered a gentler alternative to the invasive procedure that doctors traditionally use to turn babies into delivery position.
Prenatal chiropractors use the Webster Technique to address sacrum and pelvis misalignments in expecting mothers. As a result, many moms experience less pain (especially leg and back pain), easier pregnancies, and reduced likelihood of C-section delivery.
Who should consider the Webster Technique?
All mothers can benefit from prenatal chiropractic attention. The specific methods and techniques will be unique to your body and pregnancy.
In my experience, the Webster Technique can be especially helpful if you have a breech baby (or a history of breech babies). You should also ask your prenatal chiropractor about the Webster Technique if you are concerned about your sacrum and/or pelvis during pregnancy and delivery.
How is the Webster Technique performed?
At your appointment, your chiropractor will have you lie on your stomach, using specifically made cushions, while they assess your pelvic alignment. If they find any misalignment, they will gently mobilize or adjust as well as assess and realse any muscular or ligament tension, then continue to evaluate the joints, muscles and ligaments on the front of your pelvis.
As with all chiropractic appointments, it’s important to follow your appointment with hydration to aid with recovery. Be sure to listen to your body, drink water, and get plenty of rest.
